Question stickshift in 240 questions

I've seen alot aboutchanging to a stick in the w123 but what is the stick like when you get it in there? is it vauge and gummy like on my dads Scion xb or does it just sort of clunk itself in to the right gear like a 98 Dodge ram 1500

One thing that I can tell you is that the car is ALOT FASTER with the 4-Speed than the auto. At one point I had the auto and the 4-speed....the auto felt like it was dragging a trailer (so slow) and the 4-speed would just go.

If you can get a properly maintained tranny, the 4 speed is smooth and positive, not to mention it will make your 240D far easier to drive in today's highway full of 150+bhp machines. Bear in mind, being a 4 speed, the ratios are pretty wide so the drop from 1st to 2nd, there is a huge difference, properly shifted, I have had good times in NYC with my 83 240D, never won any races but did keep up well with the hatchbacks of that time.

Stick shift 240D

I had a 1979 240D with manual transmission from 1999 'til the beginning of this year. It shifted well, although one would never say it was a sports car with its long throw. I do miss it. I now have a 1999 E 300 Turbodiesel and I just returned from Germany, where I bought a manual (Jetzt helfe ich mir selbst) that describes the manual transmission in the W210 diesels there in addition to many other details of this complicated vehicle.

I like the sound of that and the long throw will make it easy to find the right gear (I learned to drive a stick on a truck I should have lots more pratice by the time I get my car back)

My '83 240 with the manny tranny shifts better thatn my late model F150 Ford pickup. Super smooth. And yeah, it is a long throw but this is no sports car. Its sorta like driving a loaded truck. Fast going downhill so you can top the next uphill at a decent speed.

Cheers,

Bill
