we all live diesel over here, but do many of us live IN a diesel?

R Leo 08-23-2005 12:54 PM

70 mph? ROFLMAO!

Can you imagine how slow that thing must be? Still, I'd love to have it.

5L diesel?? Can't be right??

When I lived in Montana in the early 80's, the county where I lived bought a bunch of them to use as city busses. They were pretty cool, but rode like rocks.

It's too old to have a 617 installed as OEM. But, there were some other MBZ truck engines put in those units. An OM614 is a possibility.

Hmm, I need a work van that I was hoping to do a SVO/WVO conversion with. I wonder if that would take drywall and a 10ft Ladder? It's close by (only 20 Mi) I may go check it out. :D

Is it worth $4500?

coachgeo 08-23-2005 05:52 PM

ad says it is a 4cyl. That makes it a probably a 240D motor. I believe that is what all that era of this model had in them for engines. Do a google search for the model number and you'll find some spechs.

diametricalbenz 08-23-2005 06:32 PM

In 1972 the 220D was the biggest they made wasn't it? Hmm 60hp and 19 people....might be faster if people got out and pushed it. ;)

t walgamuth 08-23-2005 11:50 PM

i agree

that a 240 is a good possibility. it could also be a six cyl. v ersion of same engine, or a five cyl. more likely a six three liter. i would not thnk that because the ad says four cyl that that fact is correct. also five liters seems unlikely for a four cyl. not impossible though.

They put a number of different engines in these vehicles including the 220d and 240d engines. However, the non-bus versions of this particular chassis are called 508 vans (I don't know why the numbers change for the bus version) but the 8 refers to horsepower. The 220d is a 6 and the 240d is a 7 and the 300d is a 9. But I don't think they ever put the 617 in this particular style of van. The 617 is pretty rare in any of the MB vans. Many of them had a 4 cyl direct injection diesel--is it the OM 314 or OM 352 or something like that?
By the way, there's a similar one for sale on Craigslist San Francisco at the moment.

t walgamuth 08-24-2005 09:24 AM

i think

that the 617 was built originally for the 123 body cars. and it was first offered around 1974 or 5. so unless it has been changed out i dont think it would be in this bus.

It's not the same engine from a 200/220/240D. It's WAAAYYY to big in the engine bay for that. The OM352 is a 5.6L L-6 turbo/NA, that's about as close as I can find.

As both Kerry and I said, it's most likely an OM314, which is a pretty good-sized chunk of cast iron and is found in 309s and 407s. However, the 314 is 3.7L and somewhere between 70 and 85 hp depending on the year it was manufactured.

OM 314:

OM 314 cutaway:

I doubt if it's a 352 because from what I can tell in the eBay pics, the oil fill on top of the valve cover is in the wrong location to be a 352.

it

looks like the 314 to me. a pushrod engine because of the height of the valve cover. the front water hose passing across and the oil filler look the same as the 314 cutaway.

cool pics, guys where did you get them?
