Transmission R&R
I am considering purchsing an 84 turbo wagon with a non functioning transmission. I'm wondering how much of a job it will be to R&R the tranny with a rebuilt or used tranny. I am working in the driveway with Jackstands. I have R&R'd trannys on chevy V-8s and it was not that compliccated (just Heavy). I have not done a diagnostic on the tranny yet, but I am planning for the worst case scenario. Any Advice and/or opinions?

Make it safe!
Bootsy, make it safe. Get it up and very secure on jack stands. Then with a transmission jack or a small floor jack and a helper, I would say it should slide in OK. The Mercedes, at least my W123 looks plenty tight in certain areas and the tranny is pretty snug in there. But I suspect it will go in pretty much like any other transmission.

B1 piston.
Might try doing some searches for "B1 piston", or "catastrophic transmission failure", things along those lines. I used to hate these 'boxes, but I've been converted, to a certain degree. They are crap, but seem to be fairly durable, and relatively easily repairable.

It's not too bad of a job. the starter does not need to be removed. Lower the rear of the trans down to help get access to the top 2 bolts to engine block. The cooler lines need to be completely cleaned out-not just blown out, push 1/4" plastic tubing all the way through. I'd replace the cooler flex lines in front, they are reasonable.
