neutral safety switch

I could use some sound advice on what needs replacing. About a week ago my '81 300D wouldn't turn over when the key was turned. All of the instrument/warning lights came on at the time. I then moved the shifter back and forth and tried again, bingo, the car turns over. I shrugged it off as it being my fault for not moving the shifter far enough forward to engage the switch.
Today I went to start the car, and the same thing happened again. This time I moved the shifter several times to no avail. So I jacked up the car, htiinking all I neede to do was adjust the lever on the tranny. I checked out the assembly, and all looks well, as far as the positioning of things.
Next I took a peek at the neutral safety switch. The switch itself looks ok from the outside, but who knows what the inside looks like. BUT, the plug that connects to the switch is in pretty sorry shape. I'am thinking that I will replace the switch, just to be on the safe side(the back up lamps haven't been working for some time now), and I want to replace the plug-in for the switch. My problem being, I am afraid to pull the plug off, for fear of the plug being ruined, this plug is in that bad of shape. I looked on the plug for a part number but can't locate it ( must be on the back side). Does any body know the number of this part?
If I am barking up the wrong tree on this one, could someone shoot me a reply?

My reverse lights have never worked since I have owned the car (over 2 years)....but I've never had a problem starting it....it always works to start in both park or neutral, but nothing else...just as it should...
