Power Loss

Hi - 85 300D - power loss first when climbing hills - at first would back off to 60 from 70 or so - at 55 would kick down to 3rd - engine would accelerate to match kick down and then immediately act like the fire went out on a gas engine - the more throttle the faster the deceleration - Was ok at cruising speed, just hills. Next day less power, accelerating through the gears at third shift would loose power until I lifted to about half throttle, then if on level ground it would continue to accelerate. Continued to get worse - could only get 60 on level ground at 3000 rpm max with hills getting down to 35 to 40 mph and about 2500rpm max licked down to 3rd - and just as bad when starting from stop - not over 3,000 in first and 2500 in second with same throttle response - Question is could this be valve adjustment causing a loss of compression or more likely a restricted fuel filter. Has done this though not nearly so bad and very seldom say once every six months on a steep grades at 65 to 60 but this is a whole new catagory of power loss all in about 5 hours driving time - Thanks in advance. Bill

Your car has a clogged fuel filter or filters.

Most likely its the spin on filter.

Change both and your POWER will come back ;)

And if changing the filters doesn't solve it...check your tank and listen for a "wooshing" noise as air gets sucked into your tank.
Possibly clogged vent line :)

But my money is on filters being the culprit.
