Corn Oil - Price Break Even w/Diesel
So, with the oil industry shutdown in the Gulf of Mexico and the gouge season of Labor Day upon us, it seems that $5/gallon diesel fuel may pop up in a few locations.
That is the same price you can get refined corn oil for in the grocery store. You'd have to think that buying larger quantities would get a price break. I have found industrial suppliers that provide corn oil in 35 gallon, 55 gallon and 340 gallon quantities on the Internet. Anyone actually buying corn oil in these quantities - what's your price look like per gallon? What is the difference between bulk corn oil and refined corn oil? I presume part of it is food quality but also wonder about solids floating in the oil - filter it first? How much corn oil can I run in the diesels as a percentage of fuel in the tank (combined with regular diesel) and not have to make modifications to the car? What kind of effect does this have on cold weather operation? What temperature does corn oil gell up and get too hard to pump to the engine? I sure would like to send more money to American farmers than to the Arabs and Halliburton..... Ken300D

I'm also interested as well in any info you guys provide here. It has probably been covered 1000 times but that's what makes this forum great.

make sure the oil id DEGUMED. all the veg. oils used for fuel are degumed I believe. I think the food industry uses degumed oil.

you can put a 100% in your tank as long as its summer time...but once it
gets cold then its a different story... |

I have been buying soybean oil at Sams Club for $13.02 + sales tax for 35 lbs (almost 5 gal) which comes out to about $2.60 or so per gal. Car (91 300D) runs just as good and smells better. I pour it in directly with no filtering.

Wax isn't a problem? The oil isn't too thick?

I've been driving on straight soybean oil from Costco for the last 2 weeks, and in the moderate climate we have out here, (45-50 degrees low temps at night), it seems fuel viscosity was an issue when I got to 100% concentrations.
At that point, acceleration was hesitant off the line, but once the turbo kicked in freeway speeds were easy to maintain. Once I dumped 3 gallons of Dino juice on a near full tank, that problem went away after 1-2 hrs of driving. That tells me that filters are not an issue yet. The see-thru down at the lift pump has no accumulations of crud (something others have noted), and I'm back to running dino juice until I get my filtering/storage setup. Cutting the fresh oil with 20% RUG or Diesel seems to be a requirement for this climate. Go to http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/frm/f/159605551/p/2 for a healthy discussion!

So I can just buy soybean or canola/corn oil at Sams Club or Costco around here and use it straight if I want so long as its not too cold? If it costs less I'd definatley be willing to try it out.... I just don't want to end up somewhere around here stalled from clogged filters......or other problems....

All the oils I've seen cost around 5+ dollars per gallon. Too expensive.

everything I've read says starting on WVO/SVO is gonna cause problems in the long run...
Here is a great analogy that helped me understand... The simplest way to explain this is with a simple analogy: If you place a pan on the stove, pour a small amount of vegetable oil in the pan and turn the heat to high. The pan will begin to heat up and as it does it will heat the oil, eventually it will reach 570F and begin to boil and begin to vaporize, the oil will burn and form carbon which will stick to the pan and destroy it. Now put out the fire, open all the doors and windows and allow the air to clear. Go to the cabinet and choose another $200.00 LeCrusette pan, place this on what is left of your stove and turn the heat on high again. When the pan gets to about 600F throw a tablespoon of oil in the pan, just before it bursts into flame singeing whatever is left of your eye brows, you will notice that the oil is skittering around the pan on a layer of vapor, none of the oil is sticking to the pan and none of it is turning to carbon. from this page.. http://www.frybrid.com/svo.htm Please don't use your fine engine as a test bed...Please read everything you can from all available sources!!

I think what he is trying to say is running straight oil in a cold engine will result in partially burned oil that will gum stuff up, including possibly rings and injectors. Do some research on blends that work well, both kerosene and gasoline make good blends with vegetable oil; diesel doesn't make as good a blend.

Every cheap oil I have seen at Sams in Atlanta has been over $5 per gallon. Where is it cheaper?
