Can I swap heads?

I'm assuming I can do this, but I would like to "run it by the board" just to make sure....can I swap a head from an 85 123 TD (sedan) to an 85 TDT (wagon)? They look identical, and there is a bolt (plug) on the 85 sedan head which looks like it is where the self leveling susp. pump for the wagon will mount (I've never removed the pump so I dont know what the mount/drive looks like).

Thanks,

Mark

Pictures

Pictures would help.
Someone may have put a wagon head on the sedan for some reason.

pretty sure the wagon has a unique head with a bolt pattern for the leveling pump. The sedan has a bolt that also pilots the idler sprocket shaft there, IIRC, but I'm not sure.

I will do a little exploration

Thanks Pete....I suspect you may be correct. I will have to do a little exploratory wrenching....too bad if this is the case....I have a good head on the old sedan with a recent $1,000 valve job...I need to replace the head gasket on the wagon and I was hoping to put the good head with new valves, guides, springs, seals, etc.....

wow, that's a spendy valve job for a 5 cyl! well, you could have new guides + seals in the wagon head and have it ground for maybe about a buck and a half, then transfer the new valves + springs yourself.

Thats an idea!

Dont valves need to be cut and seated (sorry my lack of specific terminology), or can I just do this myself..(isnt this called "lapping").
Also, where would you have guides installed...any engine rebuild shop? mercedes specific shop?

Thanks again,
Mark

85 300D equals sedan.
85 300TD equals wagon.
Having straightened that out, based on your description the answer is "maybe".
A normal 300D head will not work, as of course the wagon needs an opening for the hydraulic pump. The exception to this would be a Euro sedan, in which some had the proper opening for the hydraulic pump, but would bolt a plate over this opening. Also I believe some Euro sedans had a hydraulic rear suspension. (at least some Euro 240's for sure)
Since you had that extra 'T' in your description of your sedan, I'm assuming it is a turbo, which would make it unlikely to be a Euro.
So, more to the point, NO! more than likely.........

re transferring

the valves yourself, i believe it would be best for the machine shop to instlal the new valves. they will cut the seats and top off the tops of the valves to match so everything keeps in the proper location.

i will explain further if desired.

tom w

oh well... if the seats are ground and the valves not topped (ground off a little) then the valves will sit higher and affect the adjustment available. also i believe they will shim the springs so that the travel on the springs are not changed.
