1982 fuel injection pump
hey all!! I have a 1982 300sd it was missing some engine parts, I also have a 1978 300td that Im using as a part car, well I have stumbled onto something, I used the fuel injection pump off the 78 300td, will this work?? The engine does run, but not great, the 78 is a (116) and the 82 is a (126) as far as I know. Will this create more of a headache for me???
thanks |

One thing I want to add to this is if there is any online resource that spells out which IPs are compatible with which engines?

sorry!!!
I bought a 1982 300sd (w126) and a 1978 300d (w116) I am rebuilding the 1982 300sd, and it was missing the IP, vacuum pump, oil filter housing, radiator, vacuum control valve, and other things. I was wandering if i can use the IP off of the 1978 300d. It does fit, and it does run but it runs very rough. I am hoping that it doesnt hurt having that IP. And does anybody know where I can get a transmission vacuum control valve. Thanks |

ok...thanks
it sounds to me as if the ip is not the prob. if it were i am guessing it would not run at all.
if the newer car was missing all those parts when you got it i have to ask why? it seems to me as if someone took parts off it because they knew that there was something seriuosly wrong with the engine and just decided to take what they could off it. so rough running... first eleminate fuel issues. is the fuel in the tank clean? have you changed the fuel filters both and the air filter? if so then you need to loosten the fuel injector lines one at a time to try to isolate the problem or problems. when you loosten a line and the engine slows then that cyl is firing good. if the engine is unaffected that cylinder is not firing good. now take the injectors out of the strong cylinders and swap to the weak ones to see if the location of the weakness changes. if it does you have bad injector(s). if moving the injectors around changes nothing you have a compression problem which can be piston, rings, or valve problems. after doing all this if you still are not sure check back. good luck. tom w

Thanks I will check that out.
I have not changed any filters yet, didnt want to throw a whole lot into it, before I was sure I could get it up and running. I will get all the filters this weekend, and run through those injectors. The reason all parts were missing, the car was at a juck yard and I have a feeling it was just being stripped?????? Thanks again. |

well, yes
hopefully. could be. but even if someone else gave up on it that doesnt mean that the problem was ever correctly diagosed. so it still could be something simple.
