300 TDT... DO or DIE MUST SAVE

Hello to all,
Noob on deck!. Well I hope to find a means of saving my 300 TDT from a premature death. The poor old girl recently began sagging in the rear and shortly thereafter snapped her belt which wrapped itself around the PS pump pulley. The pulley shaft sheared itself off inside the pump, destroying it too in the process. I have sought a replacement pump; Vickers TYP 118, or mbz p# 124 460 1680, but cannot find a replacement for less than $700-$800 new and none at all used.
Would it be possilble/worthwhile to cap off the self leveling circuit and use conventional shocks(way cheaper) in the rear thereby allowing me to use a more readily available and much cheaper single channel power steering pump? Has anyone done or considered this before? Any thought would greatly appreciated, I 'd hate to see her go. Or perhaps any leads to a more affordable replacement pump.
Cheers MUST SAVE!!!!!!

I thought the TD hydraulic suspension pump was different than the power steering pump. How is the power steering pump affected by the hydraulic suspension?

Correct, a very pricey item connected to equally pricey pneumatic shocks, same set up that is used on the E500.

i think

i have heard of people disabling the leveling system. i believe that the sedan shocks will bolt in and perhaps you will need to pick up a set of sd springs. ( i am assuming they will work but dont know for a fact). the ordinary ps pump is pretty easy to find used i would think.

Can anybody else chime in please, I really need a fix. Every part search I run for an american market 1987 300 tdt brings up the PS pump for non self leveling models which, as far as I know were never imported over here in the first place! So what's the freekin deelio? I'm at wit's end and hate to think I might have to heap it.

Call Bernard at European Connection. 1-800-395-8636. Tell him EXACTLY what you have and need. Kinda a rare part, but worth a try. The good/bad thing is, not many of the wagons have found their way to the salvage yards yet. I have no idea how many were imported in '87.

My thoughts exactly. Not long ago I saw the same car for the second time. The new owner was parting her out and all you had to do was send your request and he'd pull it for you. That car was on there about 6 months ago so I'm sure its been scrapped by now.

Keep checking ebay and you'll find what you need. Don't overlook the completed items. Maybe someone had one that didn't sell.

Cheers,

Bill

If it is a W123 then
I'm not following this whole post.
The power steering pump and the hydraulic pump are not the same unit. The power stering pump is dirven by the fan belt. It is available, rebuilt from Oreilly's. Make sure you get the right model.
The hydraulic pump is driven by the timing chain and has no external belt drives.
It is under the power steering pump between the pump and harmonic balencer. On the timming chain cover.

Item number 186 is the hydraulic pump.

YOu can probably replace the hydraulic struts in the rear with shocks. I have not seen a post by anyone that has done this. It was available in the wagon from mercedes. But you may have to replace the coil springs. Take the time to do a search on the web and see if anyone has done this.

Dave
Its not a 123. The 124 wagons have a special Pwr Steering pump with spigots for the SLS. Hard to finid because few wagons on the scrap heaps.
Forget putting regular shocks in the wagon, I've seen it done on a 123 300TD the car was never the same, The factory SLS is great feature worth preserving IMHO.

i don't see the big deal. any tool and die maker or machinist worth his salt should be able to make a new shaft or fix the old one.
