Hello, I'm new to this forum although I'm a regular on tdiclub.com. I drive a 1996 VW Passat TDI, and I'm thinking of switching to a Mercedes. I'm a big VW diesel geek although I know -nothing- about Mercedes.

I am seriously considering a 96-99 E300 turbodiesel. Can someone give me some pointers?

-What model-specific things to check for when looking at a used one?
-Recommend a good Mercedes mechanic in the DC area?
-An reason that I should NOT buy an E300 turbodiesel?
-What kind of highway MPG should I expect?
-Recommend a reputable MB seller or dealer?

There's an excellent search engine here. With the advanced feature you can search specific to this forum "E300".... and you will hear what owners are saying.

The big differences are this:

1996 had a different steering box and a 4spd auto trans with a na 606. They do drive differently and some people don't like that so test drive first.

The 1997's drive like a traditional MB and still have the na 606. I think they came with the new 5spd auto but am not sure.

The 98-99 are pretty much the same. They use the 5spd auto and got a turbo charged 606.

Personaly I like a little power and would only consider a turbo charged 606, the extra kick is nice.

Other then the glow plugs burning out and snaping off in the heads their really are not any engine issues.

Do a search most of the W210 problem areas have been covered.
