I was just given the key and title to a 1982 240d by someone who was given to by the original owner. It has sat in a parking lot for three years and was dropped there by the original owner. The cars running/failure history is unknown . All I know is that it ran in 2002.

I was hoping someone could give me some tips on where to start to get it running.. I think ill start by dropping the gas tank, cleaning it, flushing the fuel lines, and replacing the glow plugs.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions. ANY help is appreciated

Hey Ginko, same thing happened here with trip odometer not kicking the main odometer all the time..... here's the fix:

Pull the instrument cluster and discard the small spring in the movable arm that applies tension to the trip odometer. This will solve odometer sticking.

Will the trip odo still work?

Lets start with the first thing. Battery. Put a freshly charged battery in it. Drain out as much diesel as you can and put fresh diesel in it. Change the filters and don't forget to fill up the filters if possible. Start cranking and lets see what happens

You do not give your location. Southern locations I would check for algea formation in the fuel. Northern states far less of a problem. Other than that just reading the appropiate archives would be a good ideal. If it was running when parked with a little luck it will be again very easily.

You really want to spend some time here with the search function to get as much info as possible. You are going to want to coat the cylinders with some type of oil prior to trying to turn it over. Some even recommend coating them and then turning engine over by hand via the crank bolt. (clockwise only!)
Do some searching and then have some fun. Nice free gift there! It won't stay free long.......

Charge the battery, check all fluids, eyeball the inline fuel filter, Prime the pump about 10 tens and start the damn thing. If it's any good it will start. If it does start then take the time and money to fix the other things. Stay simple or it will cost you dearly.

The car is old so the engine might be done for. At any rate good luck and if it does run half way decent SELL IT! People park cars for reasons, especially non turbo diesel Mercedes.

Good advice. If you have some reason for thinking there's sludge in the tank, take the line from the primary filter and stick it in a can of fresh diesel and start it on that. If not, just start it. My 307d sat for a year in a farmer's barn in the UK and started on the first crank once I charged the battery.
There's no point in putting a lot of work into a vehicle before you know if the engine is functional.

I put some diesel in there. Then I put a new battery in it and air filter. I primed the hand pump lots.... it gets through the filter because its coming out of the hoses that come out of the fuel injector lines. They are very old it comes out at the connections and weeps through the material. I plan on replacing those tommorrow, but i don't think that will start it. Does any one else have any suggestions. ALL HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED...... This car has been fun so far though. all the lights work and the dash lights work, the brakes work. it looks like it has a new fuel pump on it.

How are the glow plugs?>

Afer you change the leaky lines...if it doesn't start....Let us know what it does and doesn't do......
Crank? turn over? Start and stall???
