subframe bushings
Hope someone out there can help. The differential mounts on my 87 124 are completely shot, the rubber is gone and the rear end clunks back and forth upon acceleration/decelleration. These are the two that face the back of the car, and they look like they are pressed into the subframe. There are two large allen head bolts thru them.
How hard is it to change these? Will I have to disassemble the entire rear subframe? I've done bushing work before on American front ends before, but nothing like this. Hope someone has done this............Thanks, Brian

I think I can just remove the two bolts along with the bolt that holds the top of the diff and lower the diff just enough to pull the bushings out with a draw bolt setup. Anyone??

usually its just as fast to drop the diff. ofcourse the proper tool is best but in the mean time just cut a slot out of the mount ring with a hacksaw blade. they come out easily. then use a washer/bolt/socket setup to get it back in. pay attention how it came out so you can install it back in properly.

Does anyone know if the differential mounts can be installed in more than one way? I was told that on my 87 300d that "the mounts are in the wrong Position".

They go in one way. Look at the way they came out and look at how they were seated in the hole. This will help u orientate the mount in the same way.
Put ur new mounts in the freezer for a few hours. This will make it easier to get them started in. Then use the bolt and washer method to pull them in. There also 2 mounts in the front of the diff. U may want to change those also. Do not drop the diff more than u need to. Make sure u support the diff with a jack. Best to use a piece of wood between the jack and the diff. Thanks guys. Of course after my first two posts I noticed the related posts which came up. They explained it all, and it looks like I will be able to do it with stuff I already have on hand. Those related posts are a great idea, I love this site. Except I never have any luck searching. I did a search on the diff mounts and never saw any of those posts. I must be doing something wrong when I search. Anyway the more fuel goes up the more I love this car. And with my new touring tires it rides beautifully. Drove from Tucson to Flagstaff and back this weekend, 81 MPH avg speed, AC crankin, cruise workin perfect and XM Radio all the way. I was sad when the trip was over.
