Engine running hotter on Xerex G-05?

I put that gold-colored Xerex G-05 in my 1985 300D. Now it runs at about 95 degrees, where it used to run at about 90 degrees. I also changed the thermostat, so I'm thinking that is probably the cause. Even so, I thought I would ask whether anyone had heard that G-05 makes an engine run hotter.

And should I care? I swear the car seems to run more smoothly now than it did before. I just don't want to do anything to shorten the life of the engine.

Differences in either the mix percentage or the thermostat. I have seen thermostats be rated the same but make the car run cooler or hotter.

There is always a tendency to use too much anti-freeze. The SDL takes 11 quarts of coolant, total. So, the anti-freeze should not be more than 5.5 quarts for this vehicle. It's very easy to use more when you purchased two gallons.

The more anti-freeze, the less the cooling capability.

Most places in the US would be fine with 4 quarts of anti-freeze in an 11 quart system.

Might there be air trapped in the system?

It usually seems to take a few days of heat-up, cool-down cycles to burp all the air out. Give it about an hour to cool down after running, then open the coolant resevoir cap to "burp" it. Do this with the front of the car elevated a bit if possible. If it looks like it needs coolant, add water instead of anti-freeze until you get the mixture down to a bit less than 50%. Also, when you are running the car, turn the heat on for a few minutes to flush any air pockets from the heater core. After a few days of this the temperature should be back to normal.

Don't forget to buy yourself a handy dandy antifreeze tester to make sure your coolant is at the right concentration. If not, we have nothing else we can do except punch a hole in your engine block to burp it.

Check your overflow cap as well to see if it seals well

These systems are generally self bleeding through the overflow/resevoir tank. If you system is leak free it should bleed itself out in short order, just keep an eye on the over flow tank.

The only sure fire way is to find the highest point in the system where you can bleed, and crack open as you fill, keep letting coolant and air flow until there is no more air.

Also always remember to through your climate control into FULL HEAT/DEF mode t make sure you are cycling through the heater core, this is often a step that is missed and introdues alot of air into the system.

Good luck
