Smoke at high rpm's

OK,
So far I love this car. I noticed the other day as I was playing around in it that at high RPMS. over 3500 the car SMOKES a lot, Black smoke. Is this normal, or dies something need checked? There is no smoke when driving like a normal person, except right at the time it shifts.
85 300 SD

Thanks

That's not normal. It's a sign of way too much fuel. The question is where it might be coming from.

Just as a test:

Disconnect the boost line to the ALDA and take it out for a spin. It will feel like a dog, but, see if the black smoke appears after you get it up above 3500 rpm, again.

I'm curious to see if tweaking the ALDA for less fuel could help the situation.

If you still get smoke (which I doubt), the IP needs adjustment.

Another thing to look at would be a very clogged air filter. Easy to check anyway...

OK,
I checked the air filter.. No rodents
But it is gray, like it needs changed. Wow, $50+.
I will get one ordered and see if that fixes it. Next will be to find out about the ALDA line, That line runs from the tirbo to where? I have read about it, but there appears to be more than one line. I have the CA "air quality"package...

Heck, I can't fix my own smoking problem, so I might as well try to help others. I've heard about every possible fix, I just forget sometimes if it's for white smoke or black.

BTW, you could always clean out the air cleaner housing real well, remove the filter and just drive it long enough for testing purposes. You still need a filter, but you would know whether to keep looking for causes or not.

I agree, you shouldn't be getting noticeable smoke at 3500 rpm. I just drove my 300D from DFW to Denver (today) at 3500 rpm+ without smoke. Have you checked your mileage lately? I suspect you are getting way to much fuel.

Wow, that is quite the drive! What kind of fuel milage did you get? I'm guessing it was much cooler when your drive ended than when it started. Hot again here today.....

Look on the injection pump.

On the top of the pump is a small round cylinder, about three inches in diameter. There is a small screw in the very top center. The screw might be buried in plastic if you have a "virgin" ALDA.

There is a pressure line attached to a fitting on the cylinder. Remove and plug this pressure line and take it for a drive.

Don't bother looking for anything around the turbo.

I was in Arlington all last week, it's a bit warmer than what I'm used to. Actually, it's only 5-10 cooler in Denver, but much less humid. I only checked my mileage once this trip, and it was in the low 20s (80-85 mph with the AC on). In the past it's been in the mid 20s under those conditions. I may have overdone it a little with my ALDA. I'm not getting smoke, but I may turn it down 1/4 turn before I drive any distance again.

tomorrow is the day

Tomorrow I am going to look at this issue. as well as some maintenance items. the road of actually working on it begins.
One more question.

Could the low power in the mornings be tied into this? It is really slow, and does not climb hills worth anything unless I shift it down manually.

Thanks for the info. I will be back when I get results from looking around.

Thanks
doug

The low power is certainly related to the same issues. Carefully clean the lines from the intake manifold to the overboost valve, and, the line from the overboost valve to the ALDA.

Then drive it.

but i dont see why it is unusual for him to get some smoke above 3500 rpm. this sounds pretty normal to me.

Tom, he states "a lot of black smoke".

That's not nomal.

As to whether you are crazy or not, I'll defer judgment.
