The shakes...

Hey guys,

I have recently had my motor mounts replaced when i switched out my oil cooler lines (figure it would be a good time). Unfortunatley my car still strongly shakes pre-warm up. I was told that it might be air getting into my fuel line by a mechanic...(is this true?) Upon inspecting the little clear primer pump on the right side of the engine (facing it from the front) I noticed that once unscrewed for priming, every pump squirts diesel out of its seams. Could this be a source?

Also my car makes a terrible wobbling sound every time I hit any kind of bump whatsoever (it appears to be coming from the right rear of my car). What should be the things i should inspect? Exhaust hangers are fine, Wheel is on good, struts seem in good shape. What else should i be looking at?

Thanks for all your help...You guys have saved me some serious $$, if for nothing else just by being informed.

the primer pump is definatly letting air into the system, weather or not that is what is making it vibrate I dont know.

Probably a bad rack dampener ... new ones are only 35$ or you could try to adjust yours.

sounds like

your rear a arm might be rusty. grab the wheel and push in and out as hard as you can and see if it wobbles. if it does you need to check out the big a arm.

I get them HERE .

Everything is much cheaper there than at fastlane, but I still use fastlane because it supports the forums, and Phil is so great.

Take a look around though at arizona ******** (no affiliation) and check out the grand prices!

Being a simple guy I go for the simple stuff first...

Check your shock. Maybe its loose.

Also you made mention of replacing your motor mounts but what about the engine shocks?

BTW...my primer pump leaks too when unscrewed but not when screwed down. I have no problems with shaking. I would think with the pump screwed down air could not get in. Right or wrong guys???

Cheers,

Bill

Wobbling "sound"

may be coming from sway bar end links. Very inexpensive and extremely easy to replace. Check at the ends of the rear sway bars.

If not that, you may need to check the trailing arm bushings. But usually they will cause you to "feel" a wiggle not "hear" one.

The primer pump doesnt leak once closed, but im just trying to evluate where air might be getting in (if an air leak is even the source of the problem).

As far as my suspension...How do I identify the sway bar links or rack dampener? Could it be the ball joints? I honestly pretty ignorant when it comes to suspension issues.

If you have confirmed your suspension noise is coming from the rear, check the ends of the sway bar where it attaches to the rear suspension. They look like this:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1LT0Q6KDG1LY17IO4V&year=1982&make=MB&model=300-SD-002&category=L&part=Sway+Bar+Link

Your ball joints are strictly on the front and are noticable when going over bumps.

Ok so I finally got under the car yesterday to check things out. Upon inspection most everything seemed to be fine except there was a large black oily film on the underside of where the shock attaches to the chassis? What is this indicative of?

An oil leak.

Could be the shock is shot and leaking its contents or could be from the car.

Is this shock in the front or back of the car? Which side? If it is in the back could be the boot on the axle is torn.

Cheers,

Bill

Left rear. I dont think its an oil leak as it seems isolated to this one particular area. Would a torn boot have the symptoms I was speaking of (wobbling noise upon hitting a bump) or is that more symptomatic of a bad shock? I can push down hard on the left rear bumper and it comes back up with minimal bounce without the noise that area of the car makes when I hit a bump. this is why I thought it wasnt a shock, but I could be wrong. How serious is a torn boot.

Don't let Bill BS you. Old MB diesels rarely have oil leaks.

....except the ones from ebay.

Left rear shock...hmmm....Could very well be the shock losing its contents. The shock would still work fairly well. Is the shock wet with oil or just looks like grease and dirt buildup? Try bouncing up/down then immediately climb under and see if any fresh oil appears.

If wet probably shock.

If its grease/dirt it could be the CV boot torn. That could explain the wobble too. Although CV's usually hum. And no, its not that bad of a job. Search and you'll find info on that.

Maybe a bad wheel bearing? jack 'er up and see if you can rock the wheel.

Other than that, dunno. What do you guys think???

Cheers,

Bill
