Not Complaining . . . Diesel Prices

I am certainly not complaining but why would we have spiked gasoline prices while diesel has remained rock steady. Diesel, until the recent spike after Katrina, was locally leading the gasoline prices, for the most part. Now it is the lowest product . . .

Steve, maybe someone "screwed up" and forgot to spike wholesale diesel prices in NH. They sure didn't miss the chance in CT, last price for diesel I saw was $3.20

Comparatively, how does your diesel price stand?

diesel costs 2.99 and cheap gas is about 3.30.

Still, the prices are insanely insane and pricely pricy, but I feel happier driving my benzo for some reason....I think it's a comparative thing, I'm tricking myself into thinking that I'm getting a deal because I'm paying less than others....but in reality, I'm still paying more than I used to.

Here in NC, I have seen gas at $2.99 and diesel at $2.89, but I have also seen it as high as $3.39 for gas. Diesel seems to always be under $3 though. I am curious to what the prices are in SC and VA, they are always about 30 cents cheaper than the cheapest gas around here. I have a feeling they are trying to keep diesel quite a bit cheaper because of all the threats by truckers to go on strike if the prices keep rising. For a while diesel was more expensive here than gas, and the truckers were throwing a fit!

The power of organized commerce at its best? Wish they had that type of pull country-wide!

I would guess the various state tax rates on fuels play some part in price variations as we compare. I know there are some threads on the diesel fuel prices yet I was interested in how their movements compare between products and from state-to-state. The above responses indicate we are seeing a similar pattern.

I know a couple of weeks ago there were hundreds of truckers that just stopped on I-95 in Florida in a protest of the rising fuel prices. The problem is that most people can't just stop using fuel to protest (unless you have an old Mercedes like me, and can use veggie oil instead!). Really I don't think rising prices is a problem, in fact I think it might bring about a solution as more people see the incentive to look for other sources of fueling a car. Hopefully this will make it economically viable to develop hydrogen and hybrid cars. What I'd like to see someone do is develop a hybrid, but instead of a gas engine to charge the batteries, put in a little diesel engine. Just think how many miles per gallon that would get! I am surprised VW hasn't tried this yet, because their cars are small enough, and they have really refined diesel engines, that I wouldn't be surprised if they could get 100mpg. Oh, and another benefit of rising fuel prices is that we can finally see people regretting the purchase of that SUV!

Last Wednesday or Thursday night I paid $2.749 for a gallon of diesel. There were some locations charging $2.99 here in Columbia, SC. Since gasoline took the price hit, they figured they might as well do the same to diesel to make some more money.

Can't wait for that B20 pump to open in West Columbia.

Diesel is anywhere between $2.79 and $2.99 a gallon in Richmond though I saw one station selling "premium" diesel for $3.29.

Diesel's still way more than RUG in SW Washington.
Diesel's $3.19 to $3.29 (No "premium" diesel here)
RUG is $2.75 to $2.89
WVO is still free.

cheaper than gas

Here in Kansas, diesel is taxed higher than gasoline.
However, it is still less at the pump right now. The Citgo
in the middle of the city of Lawrence had diesel at $2.99
yesterday and gas at $3.05. However, the Citgo in the
northern part of the city had diesel at $2.79 and gas at
$3.05. Throughout most of Oklahoma I saw a price
difference of about 43 cents between diesel and gas. I was
able to find diesel at $2.62 at a Conoco outside of OKC.
The biggest price difference I saw was 51 cents at a Love's
in central Oklahoma. Glad I'm not driving the SL right
now.

Greater Claremont, NH area the prices for gasoline dropped $0.10 today. That totals a decrease of $0.15 this week. I haven't yet driven by to see what, if any, the diesel has changed today.

$44 for half a tank!

The upside of the higher gas prices seems to be less traffic on the road; left LA at 4 o'clock PM to go to San Diego on Tuesday, normally I would have hit traffic in Orange County and Oceanside right before San Diego. Nothing, no traffic at all, looks like there are some bennefits after all...
