where will 300D engine fit?

the body on my 1980 300D is just about history, but the drive train is great.
what other MB will the inline 5cyl diesel swap into? I have a line on a 1978 240D that is in good shape, would like to keep my 300 for a parts car,if there are useable parts from one to another. I know a 240 is a 4cyl diesel, but was wondering if the 5 would fit? or what other cars the 5 cyl will slide into?

The 5cyl should fit the 240 ok but will require some modifications to a few things....but there is enough room in the engine compartment. This is evidenced by the fact that there are 300d's (both Naturally aspirated and Turbo models) with that engine in that chassis.

from experience, yes it will fit

Hi, I just finished exactly what you are planning on doing. (5 cyl turbodiesel into a 240D chassis) It fits, but you will have to shorten the driveshaft back to accomodate the extra cylinder. The front of the engine stays in the same place, but the rear gets closer to the firewall. You might have to tweak the exhaust mounting since the 300D exhaust will have to come too, and hybridizing the electrical/vacuum systems might be a bear. What year was the donor and recipient? Definitely go to the

skinnerbox.steaky.org

site to the 123 body section and look up under electrical troubleshooting wiring diagrams and component locations. That was a lifesaver for me. This site is a great resource-look under the stickys for vacuum diagrams. That was the second lifesaver.

Good luck if you decide to do it.

300d

I would find a 300D to put it in. Its takes too much time and cursing to change over a 240D to a 300D.

Watch out that you don't put it in a 79 or older, you will have to make many modifications on the firewall for the transmission.

Have fun.

the 300 into 240 is

99% bolt in. best to start with two cars. the only part needing fabricating is one engine shock moount. we used a little angle iron. you have to change engine rad exhaust, shift linkage, ds, rear end and speedo.

makes a sweet car with the simple ac controls.
