New to Forum - Just got a '82 300D

Hello all! Just thought I'd post up as I've just won an eBay '82 300D that I plan on using to determine if we like making B100 bio-diesel. The car appears to be in decent condition with mostly cosmetic issues, but has a more recent engine from an SD and has already been converted to 4-speed manual. Having picked it up yet to get casting numbers off the engine and tranny, but will share after I get it home this weekend.

I've always been a big fan of the MB UniMogs and Gelandewagens (before they were "fashionable") but have primarily driven Isuzus. If the bio-diesel experiment with the 300D goes well we plan on importing Isuzu diesel engines as the wife and I each have an Isuzu VehiCROSS, which will take the Trooper's 3.1 as a drop-in. I have seen a 2nd-gen Trooper though with a MB TD though, so that may be an option if the numbers look better.

In any case, glad to find such and informative forum with a great bunch of folk and only hope I can eventually contribute as well.

Thanks!

I think importing them is no issue....its putting them into street driven vehicles that gets into a gray area in some states.

For Trooper diesels the trick is finding the right OEM engine. The '92 is still 1st-gen (IIRC) and you're in luck there since the '86 Trooper was available in the US with a turbo-diesel. Since Isuzu is primarily a heavy-truck producer, and also use most parts extensively cross-platform, you can actually use the engines from the NPR series of medium trucks. I believe the 4BD1TC intercooled engine has been used with a good deal of success with the Trooper and Rodeo. Troopers look pretty good with the hood-scoop for the TMIC!

since these are all Isuzu OEM diesel engines already in domestic use they're excellent swap choices. I've been specifically looking at the newer 4GJ2 since the VehiCROSS has the TOD system and that was the combo used in overseas models.
