78 300D smoking diagnosis
so I had a post in the diesel discussion and they recommended you guys. about a week ago I replaced the injectors thinking that this would help the smoke problem. here are the symptoms. The car has 85000 miles and is a non turbo.
-the car billows very light blue smoke at idle and when coasting to a stop (especially on downshifts) and idles rough (seems like it's missing) -Air filter is new -I took the oil cap off with it running and it about blew right off -I removed the breather tube while running and it blew grey smoke constantly then when I plugged the hole it shut down after about 10 sec-15sec. -It uses about 1.5 quarts every 3000 miles. (some because of leaks) -It uses almost no coolant -the coolant does not look like there is oil floating in it, but when I put it in the glass checker thing to read what the mix is I can't see the needle because it looks "dirty" -There was a lot of oil in the brake booster line when I checked it. I blew up a vaccuum pump a year ago and so I checked my rebuild suspecting that was the problem but the diaphragm was clean. -When I pulled the injectors number 3 and 5 were very dirty. -I have since loosened each injector line and it seems to be getting equal fuel and none of them reduced the smoke -The valves have been adjusted and timing chain was checked by lining up the sprocket marks with the cam tower. I read about 4 degrees on the dampener. -The car also starts slow even when warm. PLEASE PLEASE help me diagnose this problem. P.S. I was told maybe if I bumped the injection pump toward the engine just a hair maybe this would help.

i suggest
a compression check.
actually before that you should isolate the miss. the miss could be a low cylinder or a bad injector. loosten the injectors to find the cylinder that is causing the miss, then switch the injector with another to see if it is inject or compression. also you can do a leak down test to see if it is leaking into the intake or the crankcase. hope for a bad injector. second choice is a bad valve. the other choice is expensive to fix. ring or piston problems. the excessive blowby suggests this. but the other things could be bad too. fixing that will make things better even if the bottom end is tired. goo d luck tom w
