Oil leak
My 82 300sd is now leaking more oil then I care to add and am going to embark on replacing the offending part. The oil leaks from the bell housing. I have checked the oil filter housing, head gasket, valve cover gasket, oil lines, etc, but it is for sure coming from the bell housing. I understand that this means either the rear main crank seal and/or the oil galley plugs.
1) If it is the main seal, when I pull the crank to replace, do I need to replace the bearings and have the crank turned? The motor was rebuilt about 30k miles ago and there are no other problems. 2) Does anyone have any tips on removing the galley plugs? The upper looks ok, but the lower appears to be more challenging to access at the front of the motor. I plan to tap for pipe plugs when they are out. What type of sealant should I put on the pipe plugs? liquid teflon or locktite type of product? Thanks |

My best advice is to check the search feature here before taking anything apart. If your engine only has 30K on it, you should contact the person who did the overhaul to see what was done and what was not. You do not "remove" the crank to just install seals...all seals should have done at overhaul. I would be checking the easy stuff first...loose or broken oil supply lines or oil cooler lines.

This oil leak so soon after an overhaul, galley plugs are not likely but possible. Look for a crack in the oilpan{if not tightened properly they like to crack. Does oil leak worse when the engine is hot?} Worse case, rear main seal was installed backwards. This would create a leak just short of a spray, at any temp. Good luck!

re: oil leak
I have been fairly through about checking the simple stuff. I hadn't thought of a broken oil pan. Is there a common place that these break? I leak about 2 quarts/350miles.
Does the front seal need to be replaced at the same time as the rear seal? (no leaks at all now) Do you recommend any sealant when tapping and plugging the oil galley holes? Thanks for the advice |
