fixed my vacuum locks the other day '82 240D

I'm sure its been well discussed, but for the record, and in case this ends up in anyones search, I fixed some of my vacuum locks the other day

Vacuum lines are easy - yellow/red stripe = locking line (has vacuum when the drivers door is locked, vented to atmosphere when drivers door is unlocked

yellow/green strip - unlock line

yellow/blue(gray?) stripe- line that goes to the vacuum resivoir in the trunk.

My vacuum was leaking around the 'stem' of the gas cap actuator - you could see the broken rubber 'boot' when you pulled it out. 8mm bolts hold the actuator in, just methodically pull out the black plastic trunk liner(?) and you'll see the bolts- the actuator is bolted to the indside of a support beam (behind the plastic liner - you cant see it without craning your head around)

I only needed to get at the passenger side connections to do what I needed to do - lift the passenger floormat(s), lift the black cover next to the doorsill, underneath will be all the vaccuum lines that:
1) service the 2 passenger side doors
2) one lock and one unlock line from the drivers side
3) blue/gray(?) striped line that goes from the engine comaprtment (3-way check valve neat the brake booster) to the vacuum resivoir in the truck
4) a lock and an unlock line that service the fuel filler cap lock and the trunk lock
There are a couple 4 way junctions under ther cover (with all the same color tubes running into each), you'll probably do most of your unplugging from there.
From the diagram I saw, the driver's side is pretty much alike, except no blue stripe line to the resivoir and no lines to teh fuel filler/trunk lock - 3-way junctions on the driver side.

by hooking up a mitivac, pumping and watching you can pretty easily find out which line services which actuator- if you pump into a line and nothing moves you have one of 4 conditions
1) you found the leaky module =)
2) the driver's door lock is not in the position to use the line you are pumping on.
3) you are trying to fill the resivoir and its gonna take a while =)

I hope this helps, I had to read a stack of FAQ's which were kinda tough to get unless you had a car apart right next to you to compare to. I hope this makes it easier.

The other problem I had was the passenger door not locking, this was the fault of the 'spring tension vacuum actuator override linkage' (my term), which I mickey moused back into working order and re-assembled. Once you can mityvac the actuators as you desire, finding this was no problem.

Last time I run a small vac line from the front for testing all those require Vac.
No need to borrow or buy a vac device.

Bernie B,

My car wouldnt shut off if I locked the doors - well, it would shut off, but it would take about 20 seconds to do so. I normally dont have the doors locked when I wanted to shut the car off so it wasnt a big problem.
