Funny you posted this. I just finished (with help from this site!) cleaning, resoldering, and reconditioning three of these buggers. The one on my 300D was totally gunked up (No wonder the reserve light never worked, and it jumped around!).

Since my car is a 300D Euro, I stuck a 240d's sender in there (to compensate for my long-lost Euro fuel level sender unit).. this is accurate, right? Other than that.. darn, the fuel meter is SO much more accurate with a happy sending unit..

What's it normally look like? Got a photo of it after you cleaned it? Just curious.

I have one with broken wires. Any source for the wire? I'm assuming its nichrome or something very resistive.

Is the wire physically broken, as in, the middle of it? If the wire simply snapped free of the top or bottom solder points, a dab of solder should re-affix the wires in place. However, if the wire itself is physically snapped, unfortunately you're probably going to need a new sending unit.

And yes, I do believe that the side two wires, are Nichrome wiring, though I'm not 100% certain. At any rate, a new unit can be bought rather cheaply at www.thebenzbin.com .. I think the price was around $70 or so. Whatever your choice is, good luck!

Would a clean sender unit be indicitive of a clean tank, in terms of the fungus you show in the first photo?

I'm wondering if this would be an easy check, instead of having to jack the car, drain the tank, and check the tank screen.

Pete.

I like the way you think. You may even be able to visually inspect the tank interior if you take the sender out.......The strainer is at the very bottom and the flow is out of the tank through the strainer so I suspect that's going to be your worst case. If however you have a cleaner sender....Chances are your tank isn't as bad off as mine was..... ....I think the pre filter is prolly the best way to easily monitor the condition of the fuel...
