Sealed beam conversion kit

http://www.sherco-auto.com/nov03.pdf

$17.95 ea and uses H4 bulbs. Anyone with experience with this setup? Is it worthwhile or is it garbage?

I have some experience with that type of kit. I bought a set for the van.

They are junk.

You get what you pay for. The reflector is terrible and the light goes all over the place. You can use an H4 lamp. So what? Better to have kept the sealed beam. The light was better.

If you want a proper headlamp for the sealed beams, then order a set of Hella's from these fellows:

http://www.rallylights.com/

The cost is about $100.

You will thank me when you have completed the task and see the results.

I've used both the Hella and the non-branded versions. Hellas are awesome, you are paying money for the reflector technology and its worth it, its a big improvement over today's halogen sealed beams.

I bought the non-branded version in the in the early 80's from JCWhitney. They seemed to put out twice the light compared to the factory sealed beams on my Buick. But sealed beam lights at that time were non-halogens and didn't have the wattage. I don't remember the beam pattern, but I didn't really care at that time. It was just cool to have lights that were really bright and to use those little bulbs like they used on European Mercedes which I longed for....

I used to have the bosch H4 conversion kit on my car before my euro headlights. They were a great improvement from the sealed beams, especially when I installed silverstar headlights. They can be found for about $75 on ebay.

Another alternative is www.danielsternlighting.com, this guy sells Cibie's.

Personally I'm loving my Bosch units, purchased them in the Philippines for $35 each, new. An additional pair of bulbs cost a mere $5 additional. $80 total, w/ 2 extra bulbs.

Aftre installing Hellas, Bosch, Auteroche, Marchals, Cibies and Carellos I can assure you the ABSOLUTE best are Carellos.
Shell out the extra $$ and your eyes will love you for it! That said, I do have a set of AutoPal lights on my 115 car, they are excellent for the low price I paid I hesitate however to recommend them unless you are adept at installing a large rubber O ring around to OD to keep them from being loose!
CARELLOS RULE!

Thumbs up

I see gobs of older BMWs with a Hella setup on them. It's proven itself there.

CARELLOS RULE!

Ha!

after 30 years of using Hellas, Bosch, Lucas, Marchal (man I miss Marchal) [H4 AND
Amplilux] Regular Cibie h4s and Zbeams, Carellos, Piaa, and IPF, i won't hesitate
to say the IPF *(with the ARB wireing harness) were the best h4 type drop-in headlamps
I've ever had. (I did have a pair of Cibia bi-oscars mounted as headlamps once, but
that doesn't count, nor should the ampilux)

I'd rate'em IPF first, Carello a very close second (the beam pattern on the
IPF is cleaner, the Carello, like the IPF has a really fine reflector) Then
the Marchall which you can no longer get, Then Cibie, then everything else,
the Lucas on the bottom of the pile.

But even a Lucas is a drastic improvement over a standard "sealed beam".
(a regular sealed beam non-halogen shouldn't be allowed on the street
after dark, unusable).
I've never owned a car that had sealed beams in it longer than it took for me to
purchase replacements. Except of course, my old F150. That doesn't count.

OK, I have never used a IPF headlight. I may just buy a set and try them.
I forgot to include the Sylvania sealed beam halogen units called silvervision or something. The aren't worth the cost for a new lamp, one may as well look for an H4 and be done with it.
Ampilux are way out of my price range too, I'd rather see them on a big Bently or something!
