Diesel Temps?

I just bought an 83 300SD. Car runs fine...got 32mpg with first tank. With outside temps of 70-80f, I run 60-65c (140-150f), unless I go 80 MPH, then I get up to 80c (176f). I read the OEM Tstat opens at 185f...could be I'm stuck open or somebody put a 150f Tstat in it.
I'll pull and test Tstat...probably put new one in.

Does this seem low to diesel drivers?

Do diesels run cooler than gassers?

What temps do other dieselers run?

That does seem a little bit cool..... Usually I hear about them running between 80 and 90C as a normal range, and even up to 100C.....

Check your thermostat, just to be sure.....

But, as long as you are not overheating, you will be fine though

yeah

it could be missing its stat too. which is a no no in a benz. wo it the car will run hot in the summer and never warm up in the winter. or on the highway in the winter may also run hot.

the right way is to put the flat disc of it down and the pointy thing up.

Thermostat or sensor?????

Hello All, I was also wondering about the NORMAL operating temp. of a 1984 300D, mine never passes the 60 deg C range, I even tried ot get it to run up, I think my sensor is bad, and / or Thermostst. Is the temp sensor the one in the side of the block by the IP, or the one by the EGR / Thermostst neck? Is this an easy replacement? Thank You, ---Paul

Pulled the stat...it looked brand new. It was closed when cold but after heating it up to 200f, it fully opened and then didn't close for an hour - bad stat. Installed new 176f deg stat....temp shot up to 100c/212f at idle. I'm thinking-dang, is this new one stuck closed!!!! I should have tested it in water beforehand. But no, problem was not enough coolant/water...I just filled the reservoir. So I pulled the hoses to tstat housing and upper rad hose and filled them. Now, the idle temp is 82-84c and I've got GOOD heat in cabin (heater on max temp brings temp down to 80c)...60c at idle don't get you much heat.

PC300D...I'd check your tstat first. The Haynes is real good with the procedure.
