603 Fuel Main Filter, spin-on or canister type?

Hello All:

A friend of mine just purchased an 86 300D and brought it buy for me to check out. One curiosity I noticed is that his main fuel filter is an aluminum body, looks like a canister type of filter with a drop in element, like the oil filter is. Mine has since purchased used the common spin-on type of fuel main filter.

Is there a peformance issue with these canister filters? We have not opened his yet to verify, and the only markings indicate Bosch. Were these phased out in preference for the spin on type? I can't recall anyone offeing the drop in filters for sale. An conversion issues?

Thanks,

My SDL has the 603 engine and it has a Spin-on Fuel Filter.
As long as it is the correct spec filter I doubt that it matters if it is a drop-in or spin-on. The filter elements are probably equally effective. The spin-on just makes less mess when replaced.

Thanks; I was wondering whether this was the original or not

I had read some thread regarding the frequency of filter changes, and his pre-filter looked clean. If this thing is original it may never have been replaced? Unless the MB dealer serviced it with the cartridge type filter up until now. The car has 180K and drives great

Does anyone still have the canister type of fule main filter? are your still getting replacement filters for this set-up?

It's a spin on, probably a Bosch.

Thanks, it did say Bosch on it, its just so dull and oxidized that it looked like a cast aluminum piece. A new MB spin on is going on this weekend.

The Bosch filters have a very distinctive look:
