Wink A 240 that gets 40-45 mpg.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=190105611&dealer_id=1394319&car_year=1982&search_type=both&make=MB&distance=0&model=240D&address=83706&certified=&advanced=&max_price=&bkms=1129905484996&min_price=&end_year=1985&start_year=1981&isp=y&lang=en&cardist=1872

Somebody on autotrader.com says their 240D gets 40-45 mpg, and then later in the discription they tell you the odometer doesn't work. Hmmm...broken odometer probably expains the awesome milage.

It is a pretty nice looking 240.

Hehe, perfect candidate for an eBay sale. Low miles, and great mileage. Coincidence? I think not.

There were some magizine in existance when these cars were made... which did great test reports... almost everything you might want to know about a car... piston travel per mile or something like that...
Does anyone have a copy of that magazine ( perhaps Car and Driver , Road and Track ) when they tested the manual 240 d ?

edit , may have answered my own question...

Notice that not only did the odometer quit, it died "recently."

Have you ever seen an ad where the odometer quit "ages ago." ... All of them claim the odometer's only been out a month or two, or a day or two, heck, an hour or two!

A broken odometer will give you mileage calcuations with erroniously bad economy.

Unless the miles traveled is estimated.

This is quite true. But there still is no way that car gets 40mpg.

It is amazing how the odo's on these cars always break right before they are sold.

No one every says "the odo has been broke for 6 years and I am to cheap to fix it. I probably drive 30k miles a year"

The add reads "mint one owner car with only 80k on the odo"

40 to 45MPG from a 240D? Sure it's possible. If you filled the tank in Cloudcroft, NM at 8,600 feet above sea level and then drove the 16 miles down the mountain to Alamogordo, NM which is at about 2,500 feet above sea level and then filled the tank and did the calculation, then that mileage would be possible ON THAT TANKFUL.

I have driven 240D's about 800,000 miles plus the mileage that my wife and kids drove them. I keep complete records on my cars including mileage and gallons at EVERY fillup. I can tell you that anyone claiming average fuel economy of anything over about 31MPG or 32MPG tops either don't know how to properly measure and calculate fuel mileage or they are lying. Period.

Have a great day,

I sure wouldn't consider 200K with a broken odo LOW MILEAGE either-and a "few bubbles" in the paint indicates someone shot over rust with a cheap paint job(very common in these parts, usually with too much hardener causing surface cracking/crazing)-I wouldnt touch that one unless the seller dropped that "3" (as in $3000) off the front of the price!!
