E300d 1997

Hi ALL,
I am new to this - but in need of some help.
I have a 1997 E300D 126 K - the engine "ran on" - car was parked with the key in my hand. Engine maxed out RPM for 3 to 5 minutes (seemed like hours at the time) white smoke out back - a nise?? then -- died. The next morning it started - but enough white smoke came out of the back to kill every bug in a mile radius. I did a compression test - 5 & 6 cylinder - zero compression. I pulled the engine - ordered tool (XNZ) to pull head. Tools are arriving next Monday. Does anyone have a procedure to pull the head? Line up timing chains/ cams etc.? I would apprecite any help I can get...
Does anyone have any idea what made the engine run on?? Is this a common problem?

I have owned - 68 200D, 87 300TD - never had any problems..

Thanks..
