bad ip
i have a 84 300d turbo. it ran fine high speed(above 40 mph) but from stop it was a dog. i tried to adjust the alda but no effect except smoked a lot. i bought a used ip from pick-n-pull for $25 and took a chance by swapping my old ip. and walla, it fixed the problem, now my 300d has a lot of take-off power and it doesn't even smoke. before, my old ip smoke when u first start the engine and also when u try to accelerate. also before i swapped my ip i replaced the alda first-no effect then i replaced the pump-no effect so i finally swapped the ip, a lot of work but it was well worth it.....
ps i also checked the ip timing before ireplaced it... |

Similar problem with 240D
Congratulations on the fix.
I have been struggling with a very similar problem on my 79 240D with auto, and have eliminated everything except the IP itself. The car has been in my family since new, and was not always like this. Also, other 240Ds are not this bad. The question I have is how to adjust the governor on the IP? The Mercedes manual gives a description of operation that describes a "breakaway" spring and a "compensating" spring. These seem to be the only adjusments on the governor (except the altitude adjustment, which I have played around with with little success). Is it practical to do this without specialized tools or testers? Am I completely off base? I am not talking about calibrating the pump part, just the governor, which seems like it could be the problem. |

I have a question for crusingz-I just changed my injector pump on my 300sd. I must be off-timing-by a little bit. I took number 1 injector out.Turned the engine around by hand until number 1 was coming up on compression. Brought the engine around until it was-i think 24 degrees before top dead center. Made sure the IP mark was about 11 oclock-put it together.I must be off a little bit ,it smokes a lot and idles rough.I moved the ip in the bolt holes and got a little better-but still idles rough. So I must be off a little bit-timing. Is this how you timed everything when you changed your pump?

ip timing
hi dave,
the way i did mine was before i pulled the ip i put the crank on 24 deg mark then pulled the ip, if the marks line up then your on the compression stroke if not you have to rotate the crank 360 deg. if you have already pulled the ip, i would take the valve cover out and keep an eye on #1 int valve, while turning the crank wait tilll #1 int valve is on its closing stroke, this would be your comp stroke and set the crank at 24 deg, hope this helps.....john |
