How to pull a 617 engine?

Hi guys, the local junkyard has a 300D-turbo with engine in it. The oil fill cap has been taken off and rain has fallen down the engine. The junkyard manager said I can have block, ip, turbo & starter for $150 total, if I remove the crap. I can't have the radiator, AC/comp, alternator, tranny, or ps pump for that. (I plan on taking the vacuum pump and cruise act though)

My question is, how do I go about pulling this motor? My neighbor has a cherry picker hoist and we have a large tandem axle trailer to haul it on. I might be able to get the junkyard to lend us one of their forklifts, but it's a slim chance (they're a bunch of crooks anyway! )

I am kinda planning on building a standby generator with this, as I run a computer repair place from my house and when the power is out, I am out! I'm sure the block will be seized, but I've heard the generous use of ATF should free everything up. If I can do it, it would make a fabulously reliable generator.

Thanks!

Why

There is a thread on this topic = changing a MB diesel into a standby generator,
The cost is very high, and that was starting with a good engine.
I will try to find the thread.

My buddy and I did it in about 3 hours including breaks to open cold beer.

The things to disconnect are, in approximate order:

battery (remove it)
Driveshaft (15mm bolts, need socket wrench and box wrench)
transmission wiring
speedometer cable under car
transmission mount (large socket ~19mm and a floor jack)
Engine mounts (need allen head socket)
Engine shocks (need vice grips and I think an 8mm socket)
fuel lines
Accelerator linkage
AC lines
oil pressure gauge hose at filter housing
Glow plug wiring
starter wiring
exhaust at turbo
heater hoses
power steering hoses
vacuum lines
radiator hoses
engine oil cooler lines
transmission cooler lines
fan bolts
remove fan and then radiator

Then lift If you can't cut out the radiator support, you'll need to tilt the engine 30 to 45 degrees to get it out.

thanks hunter

Thanks hunter.

Have a few more ?'s though. Would the 617 engine have an output shaft, or just a flat flywheel face? If it has even a stubby little output shaft, there is a machine shop nearby that can probably make me a drive shaft. I already know what I'll do for speed control. My neighbor's bobcat has a belt-driven external governor (uses a Ford 4-cylinder gasser for power) and I'm sure I can get one of those fairly cheap at a tractor boneyard (Stamm equipment. Wayland, MI)

Second, I am looking at several 1800 rpm units on ebay, mostly 24 kw. Require 45-50 hp. Would a 617 produce that at 1800 rpms? Would it produce it at 1800 rpms without a turbo (read: does turbo even produce any boost at 1800 rpm)? I want to know when I get this motor whether to leave the turbo for power's sake, or remove it for reliability's sake.

Thanks!

Leave the turbo on it, it should begin spooling up at 1800 - 2000 RPM.

Doesn't it depend on the load? I'd imagine more the load more the turbo boost due to the increased heat/exhaust.....and I'd imagine its producing 45-50hp by 1800rpm, especially if its running with boost/under load.
