Why would I have coolant on my rear axle?

I was checking the flex plates under my 1982 300D, when I noticed that the rear axles (I think that's it, the part in the center of the axle anyways) had coolant on it.

Is this just a chance splash up off the road, or is their actually somewhay to get coolant on that area?

Wierd.

Pete.

Either you've got coolant along the entire underside of the vehicle, or it's just a splash off the road. If the former, I'd bet that you would be adding coolant constantly.
