83 300 turbo a/c compressor

After rading pages and pages of threads, i'm still a bit confused. I'm not sure if the compressor is good, so i wanted to jump it to test. Which wires do i hold together? A pic would be very helpful. Second, how do i tell if my system is an R-12 or R-134a. I bought the car with 312K, and it has serivce records up until that, and no record of an conversion. When i first started, i opened the fuse box, and there was a 25amp fuse #8. covere says it needs to be 16. I put in a brand new fuse. Ran a/c. It was semi-cool. I come back today and it's warm air. I think it's low, but if its r-12, don't want to waste money if compressor is bad. Suggestions?

I'm getting a new exhaust next week, and I'm going ta have the A/C worked on as well. I'm tired of not having it, too.
