Worried about the FUNGUS....!!!!

I will be putting the SD away for the winter soon. I picked up a 55 gallon drum to collect WVO in over the winter. I am filtering through a pillowcase which has worked great so far.

Should I be worried about algae, fungus growth or microbial growth inside the drum as I collect over the winter?

mix some Biobor and then you definately won't have to worry.

I have used a few of their products before so I went to check more out. The Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost boasts fuel stabilization for long term storage-protects against conditions that promote microbial growth.

I have a jar of 100% WVO I used in my experiments. Maybe I'll pour a little of it in there to see what happens. I don't want any "fallout".

I know boiling is not a foolproof method of getting all the water out but I was doing it for a while. The oil I have been getting now is from sealed containers straight from the fryer so I don't think it will make a difference.

Depending on the time that oil was hot vs actually frying food you could have significant water in it. Basicly a high volume restaurant that frys a lot of food can be waterlogged stright out of the fryer. Assume nothing. You still need to check it as well as oil you sucked out of a dumpster.

The oil that I WAS getting out of the dumpster (oil barrel) was very good looking oil. On colder days there is no thickening and very little particulates. I always boil that stuff. As the temps approach boiling point you can hear the "crackling" I brought that up slowly to 250 degrees. I have filtered that oil and ran quite a bit of it with no ill effects.

My new source lets the oil cool and drains it directly into the original containers. The first few batches I got I tried to boil and there was no sound at all up to about 275 degrees. This is also very good looking oil (no separation) and I filter it before running.

Sweet. I'm not being criticle and am not running WVO yet but I always wonder about some of the oft overlooked costs of using WVO as a fuel....like fuel for the boiling.....Of course the cost is only one factor. I'm a proponent I'm just not there yet...

I thought about that aspect also. I was boiling the oil in a turkey fryer so I was using propane. I turned it up pretty high but the oil was up to temp pretty quickly. I did over 5 batches boiling almost 5 gallons at a time. I have alot of fuel left in the tank yet.

It has been working great so far. I dump about 10 gallons of WVO and then fill the rest with pump diesel. So I am paying about $2.50 for diesel. (it has been a while can't remember exactly).

In the end I am traveling about 500 miles for roughly $25-$30.
