Need quick way to check alternator/electrical system on 81 240D

I just picked up a 81 240D for a song, but I the alternator is screwed up I think. The battery isnt getting a charge and if you turn on the head lights, they dimmed till they are out. Is there a quick way to check for alternator failure? Are there any Gotchas, I need to watch for. Where do I need to check the alternator at (Test Points).

Thanks I am on the road and only being able to drive during the day sucks.

The easiest way is to find a place that sells batteries and have them do a free charging system test. If you have a volt meter, check the voltage across the battery with the engine running.

Usually you don't need an entire alternator. You can replace the regulator/brush kit without even removing the alternator from the car.

I would phone a salvage yard from local listings or recomendations wherever you are and see if they have a good used alternator at a reasonable price. Possibly all 123 series have basically the same alternator. They might even let you change it out there as well. Or change it for you cheap enough as you may not have any tools with you. Your description sounds like an inoperative alternator basically. I always remember my trip with a new to me 240d that appeared to need an exhaust donut. Every place I stopped was too busy to have a look or pleaded no parts on hand. Really found when car was home previous owner had probably loosened exhaust header pipe to change motor mounts and forgot to tighten it. That was all it was. Problems on the road can be hard to deal with sometimes. Luck and being resourceful can help. Why not post where you are right now and a way to contact you. Perhaps there is a member nearby that might get you local help. Cannot hurt to try.
