Anyone change ball joints on W124?
I have to change my ball joints on my '87 300D and was wondering how hard it is to do it. The CD manual shows that some special tools are needed but I figure I could improvise something from my tool box to do it. Has anyone DIY?

The thread gave me a good idea where to "rent" the tool
The 124 front suspension is quite a bit different from the 123/126 and I plan to do the job w/o removing the lower control arms. I think it can be done that way.

I'm not really thrilled with how the author did this job but he clearly warns the reader about the potential dangers and he uses a minimum number of special tools. IMHO removing the control arms is not really all that hard and its sure easier working on the ball joints on your workbench. |

Thanks for the link. He didn't pull the control arm either which requires removing the coil springs, a thing I wouldn't want to mess with in any case.
One thing I didn't realise is that you have to remove the struts to do this job. As far as special tools go, I could get the press from Autozone.

Going to try to change the ball joints, tie rods, drag link and rebuild the idler arm on Saturday. Wish me luck.

I can't promise I will since its bound to be a greasy job and I don't want to grease up my digi camera.

I know what you mean. If you have a box of gloves changing them for pics can be a PITA. I have thought about putting the camera in a zip lock bag and cutting a hole for the lens.

The baggie is a good idea and I have plenty of gloves.
