4-speed set-up
Well, I knocked that 240D in the head today. Engine is out and while I was at it I took all the 4-speed stuff. Pedal box, shifter and linkage, driveshaft, etc. The car has 125K on it and shifted well...What's this stuff worth? Anyone here interested in it?
If I don't sell it, I'm thinking of using the bellhousing and adapting it to a New Venture 4500 5-speed for my Land Rover. If there's someone here that's really interested in it, let me know. jim |

The 4500 isn't really that big and there's a kit to mate it to the Land Rover transfer case. The 3500 has an integral bell housing so using it, I'm back to making another adapter plate.
A little history...I make adapter plates to mate the 616/617 to a Land Rover transmission. It works great but the Land Rover transmission is only a 4-speed and is a little weak. The 4500 is about the strongest 5-speed out there and eliminates the need for an external overdrive unit. What I'm thinking about doing is using the Benz bellhousing and mating the 4500 to it. (Hence eliminating the need for my adapter plates! ) jim |

isn't the weak link still the 8 1/2" clutch or do you think it's enough?
Just seems kinda small to me... most nv4500s use a 11-12" IIRC the reason I ask is I'm using a chev pre 85 flywheel and drilling it to match the benz crank ( seen one done) , then usiing the lakewood scattershield bell housing , chev PP and clutch and a 4 speed land cruiser trans... think I'm OK? |

Hey Jim, what year was that 240D? The one I just bought looks as though it has an integrated bellhousing. But then again I haven't crawled underneath it to get a closer look. Did they change them later on?

would this work the other way? ie using a landcruiser or landrover 4speed w/external overdrive or 5 speed in a w123 body?

Don: This car is a '79 and the bellhousing is a separate piece. It's kinda funky on the face that the tranny bolts to but I'm going to have to make a mounting plate there anyway. jim |

oh well...
Looks like I'll hafta mate the plate to the T90 bellhousing, unless I find an old style one.
Too bad too, as I really wanted a hydraulic clutch. |
