Question 1987 300TDT brakes blowing fuses

Well, here we go.

1987 124 wagon, the misses brought to my attention the fact that her tach, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, and bulb warning light were out. I looked into it further and discovered her brake lights weren’t functioning either. I replaced the fuse started the eng and the gauges came back to life . So off she went to work the next morning, I get an angry cell call saying her dash quit right after she drove away from home. I looked into it further that night and found that the fuse blew again after hitting the brakes:wtf: . I went right to the taillights and began the inspection. I replaced all the lamps (even Cyclops) I put a new fuse in the #5 spot and started the car and hit the brakes, and no blown fuse. Since then she has replaced the fuse 4 times . I checked the wiring coming out the top of the hatch and to and from the tail light assy. It all appears ok. (also one of her license plate lights is out and a new bulb did not fix problem)

I did a search for brakes blowing fuses and fuses and saw a bunch of hits on the 123 series but nothing I considered similar.

Has anyone had issues similar to mine? My guess is that I have a intermittent short in the wiring to the hatch (Cyclops) (and might also be tied in with the non-functioning tag light)

Side note.

Has anyone changed out the front oil seal on the 603 without removing the timing cover. Hers is leaking profusely (her dad will not let her in his driveway anymore) and I dread the thought of having to pull the timing cover. But if I have to I will

I don't think you looked closely enough at the wiring!

Shorts just don't happen without cause!

There is a short, you just have to find it...time... look closely.

I cannot answer you question about the front seal, but it is rare that a front seal should leak! It's usually the rear seal.

Check all the 10mm bolts connecting the oil pan, including the long ones back inboard the transmission area in the oil pan! I have solved at least once oil leaks by tightning all these bolts!
