300D starter solenoid question
How does it come apart?? After removing the two nuts (ok 4) on the wire connection posts, shouldn't the "cap" come off? I am trying to clean the contacts etc.
Thanks Nat

Are the internal contacts not cleanable? I thought I had read that some clean them with good results....?

I still don't see how it comes apart!
It looks to me like the metal edge of the housing is rolled over the rear cap preventing iit from coming off, no? Anyone?

FWIW, I've never had a 5cyl starter in my hand, but I've "redneck rebuit" my 240D and a stack of VW starters...
The solenoid has 2 or 3 phillips screws (about as long as the solenoid itself...) screwed in the "front" (gear/pinion end) of the starter housing... The starter is in 3 big parts - the solenoid (which is the back, contacts and sides of the solenoid cylindrical shape). There is a "front casing" (all my terms only...) that has the lever, the front motor bearing and the solenoid bolts to this using 2 or 3 screws as defined above. you will probably need an impact driver to get those screws out (or, they'll break...). The solenoid body should come off but they are normally corroded in place, so plan on using a hammer (beat it free) or wedge to pry the solenoid "back" away from the "front casing". Sorry if I'm not helping... I cant get a fixed width font to ASCII with. -John

To clarify, I have the solenoid off the starter motor, But want to *open* the solenoid. Does it?
Can you buy the solenoid only from somewhere? I have not managed to find a source.

Thanks, after looking around a bit, I decided that sevicing it was not an easy project, and I could buy a new solenoid locally for $45, so I did.
They are availible online for as low as $28 it seems.
