Block heater, freeze plug

I have a '74 240D and a '78 300D. I want to install block heaters in both and was wondering the best way the remove the freeze plugs. Does anyone know the diameter of the freeze plug hole so I can properly size up an after market heater make by Kat's etc??

those plugs

are a bear to get out. if you dont have a lift to use i would recommend taking it to a shop to remove it. it may take a 5' breaker bar.

yeah don't be kicking on a cheater bar with the car on jackstands....

I pulled off my intake and exhaust manifolds and did it from above....which is a lot of extra work.

I had no access to a lift...and was too cheap to pay a shop.

You'll want a 3/4" or 19mm hex bit socket, or better yet, a short stub of 3/4" hex stock and a 3/4" or 1" drive socket & breaker bar. Clearance around the starter is tight on a 4 cylinder, I know you can do a five cylinder without removing the starter, not sure about the 240D.

Get the factory 400W heater, it threads right in to the drain plug hole in the right side of the block.

Sounds like it may be at least a 6 beer job. Do you think it would help to spray some penetrating oil on it every day for a week or so? Sounds like it would be easier to put a heater in the lower radiator hose but not sure how effective these are. I have tried one of those magnet heaters years ago and it didn't work to well.

its a bit of a pain but they work well enough to go through the grief to put the proper block heater in.....particularly if you are a DIY'er...
