1987 300TD Wagon Fan Question??

I need to replace the stock metal fan due to one of the fins missing. Can I use the cheaper Plastic on this car instead of the $200.00 oem metal fan??? It is tough to part with that much money for some metal.

I am not sure if it would run hotter due to plastic. Again 1987 300td wagon. Thanks in Advance.

George

plastic

should work.

or you can cut off the blade across from the broken one. how many blades does it have?

if it is an odd number this would be tricky.

on my 62 190 fintail i broke one of the blades off. i simply cut the one across from it off and went on down the road. never missed it. but no ac on that one. it had four blades to begin with.

if you have an even number you can try it. if it doesnt work you can always buy another blade later.

The answer is yes. The new fans are all plastic, you can not buy a new replacement in metal.

It has 10 fins and my local benz dealer does sell one bt as stated it is metal and my cost is 200. a little more than I wanted to spend when the plastic one is 40.00 dollars.

Some other posts talked about the metal does a better job cooling the car and as we know the death of this car is overheating. I just do not not want to risk the car overheating.

Thumbs up

Downside of the metal is being heavier causing more powerloss and load on the bearings of the water pump.

Also for some reason metal fan clutches and plastic won't interchange, I'm going to buy both and see what the deal is on them.

I have an extra metal one if ya are interested...
