Diesel VW's not legal in New York.

Apparently it will not be possible to register a diesel powered VW in New York State, effective some time in 2006....

this puts a serious damper on my lust for a TDI.....

I guess I'm going to get a gasoholic with a 5 spd (maybe the passat v6....woo woo) I'll pay through my anus for insurance.

Perfect reason to be damned careful which party you elect your leaders from.....

The dieselphobic states all seem to be blue states...so far anyway.

I don't see how NY is going to make diesels illegal....they may not register new diesels but the oldeones already in the state should be fine.

Isn't that nice when there is a typo in the title of your own thread.

I think maybe my mom and dad just told me that because they don't like diesel cars and they've been reminding me of that every time the subject of a new car comes up.

HOLD ON. I shall use google to retrieve the Real Facts, Real Fast.

I think its related more to states and cities that have had more chronic pollution problems, and are trying to do whatever they can to alleviate the problem. I think banning diesels isn't the right solution, but they are just trying whatever they can do. I think they'd be grasping for straws regardless of the leadership, since their big cities have had big problems that no one is fond of (I don't know who loves their brown clouds..).

Better for people and politicians (on either side) to support the shift to biodiesel and ULSD which will allow auto and truck makers to install catalytic converters and particulate traps on cars, which will bring the diesel emissions way under modern gasser emissions (though they are still less than gassers on several counts, just not NOX and Particulate). As usual, politicians (again, on both sides) are more fond of banning things than of solving problems...

peace,
sam

Sales of new diesels in NY (and, iirc, 4-5 other states) haven't been legal starting with, I think, the 2004 model year. Those states have tied their emissions laws to the ones set by CARB, the California Air Resources Board. When CARB sets a standard for California, the CARB states follow it automatically. If you do some searching on www.tdiclub.com, you'll find a lot of discussion of the subject. The way most people get around it is to buy a used car with 7,500 miles on it; most (all?) states won't prevent the importation of used cars, the idea is that it's a much smaller and more sporadic impact than the sale of new cars, and they can't reasonably prevent an existing owner moving into the state, for example, from bringing his own car.

There's some question as to whether sale of new diesels anywhere will be legal in 2006 when the new EPA standards go into effect nationwide, but the impact won't be New York-specific.

I say we round up all the environazis and drop them off at the closest border....

Their is something seriously wrong with any person who finds enough of a problem with a VW diesel to ban their sales but finds nothing wrong with a Ford Excursion ......maybe thats becasue thats what they drive.

Perhaps they are targeting passenger cars with diesel engines.

Maybe Benzo diesels will be/already have been outlawed as well.

Also messed up is the fact that old diesels are smog-exempt in CA, yet new, cleaner passenger car diesels are illegal. I've read the same thing as PC Dave about new diesels becoming 50-state legal once ULSD is available everywhere. I hope that will be the case. Even better would be if at least B20 were available everywhere.

I don't think the politicians in the CARB states are really enviro-nazis, they're just misguided and dumb. I've read that CARB is starting to open up to the idea of diesels because of their superior fuel economy. If these politicians want to clean up their air, they should start with the big vehicles: commercial trucks, buses, SUV's, and pickups. They are the ones spewing out the most pollution, yet they're smog exempt or subject only to lenient standards.

I posted this somewhere already but in my opinion this has nothing to do with environmentalists. If they were concerned about the environment they would have to ban gas powered cars. The environment in mind and not filling oil ceo's pockets (watch the news!) would make them support biodiesel and ban all dino fuel for private use. The technology is out there.

Airbus,

Off the subject, but did you ever figure out your vacuum/brake booster issue on your 240D?

Yep, but too lazy (and broke) to fix it. Booster leaking internally. No big deal, just have to press the pedal a little harder.
