There's a tranny for sale in town for cheap. How do I found out if it will work on my 300TD? Is the number stamped on the tranny itself?

The number will be stamped on the right side just above the pan lip. For your '82 300TD I expect you should be looking for a 722.315. Any 722.3xx would work, but the 722.303 has an electric speedo sender. The 722.1xx units were for non-turbos and earlier 300SDs, and don't have a bowden cable attachment, some don't even have a vacuum modulator.

The number that the russian vin site gave me was 722120 02 135933. Old300D are you refering to the first 6 numbers? Can I see what is actually stamped on the tranny with it still in the car?

Sounds like a 722.120. Yes, first 6 numbers. I assumed you needed a 722.315 because that's the number on my scrap unit from an '82 300CD. Definitely verify the number that is stamped on your unit, and yes you can see the stamping with the unit still in the car. Just crawl underneath and wipe the edges off with a rag. You should see the stamping on the right side just above the tranny pan. A quick verification of the pan will tell you as well -- if the pan has 4 bolts holding it on, it's a 722.1xx; if it has 6 bolts, it's a 722.3xx.

I couldn't find the number on the tranny. But it is a turbo and it has 6 bolts, so is it safe to call it a 722.315?
