Euro AMG W123 wagon

I purchased a W123 euro AMG wagon today. It has cloth interior, power front windows, hand crack rear windows, AMG body kit, manual AC controsl. Very nice interior, ok exterior. Originally it was a gas model, but the engine/trans was out when I got it. Here is the deal, it came with no paperwork at all. NO TITLE. I can not find a Vin on the car either. I looked by the windshield, the inner door frame, the radiator suport and the firewall, and no vin. the firewall vin was actually ground off. Is the vin printed anywere else on the car? If I can not register this car I will transfer all the parts to a US car. Pictures soon.

Rub it in will you..................

Title should be able to be gotten through title services....far better than trashing a car if in fact it really is an AMG....

Hey, that's my car!!! If there is a Knicks vs. Celtics ticket under the driver seat from 1989 then that's my car!!!! Last time I saw it was 2am on 34th street.

But seriously, that sounds like a nice car, but it also sounds like a stolen or illilegitimate car. Check out the thread in the vintage forum on 'Why you need an auto title' or something like that, Interesting links to Hemmings articles about it. Read them, and consider that you just may *never* be able to title or register this car. Worst case scenario is that you find a VIn somewhere and the rightful owner gets his car back, or is that the best case scenario?? Anyway, there are many possibilities, but be aware for the worst.

Now adays people have their VIN-etched into every windshield. It costs a lot of money for a thief to replace every windshield, so virtually none do.

Never buy a car without a title.

Always check the VIN before you hand over money, because once you've done that then you have bought the car.

My '79 Chevy pickup that I've had since new was stolen back in the 80's. It went through a chop-shop type operation where the vin #'s were ground off. It was identified via another vin location up in the frame somewhere. Anyway, since then I have to register it via the # on the engine.

Ok, if it was a higher dollar car, I would have demanded a title, however, it was $400. I know I could get that for the wheels alone. I know that if I can ID this car with a vin, I could run a lien on it and aquire california papers. If anyone knows where a VIN might be written other than the really obvious places, then I might have a chance. Otherwise I have a bunch of killer rare parts.

The US models have the vin in more locations, but the euro only have it in 4 locations. which you already looked. you might not be able to get a vin and title for this car.

i would

ask a police man or ladie that i know. here, i happen to know the former chief of police who happens at last note to own a killer 33 ford street rod.
i suspect that your car was stolen, but due to its age, it has already been paid for by the insurance co. and prob nobody cares. so it might be possible to get a search done to find out if anybody is looking for the car and if the results are neg perhaps it would be possible to retitle.
so maybe you know someone there similar to my friend who can help you out.

good luck. sounds like a cool car.... or at least cool source of parts.

It sounds like you need to find another wagon "parts car" with a title and good VIN number...

well

i thought about a second car, but how you going to do it? just trade the tag in the windshield? i am not sure you are safe that way.

i still think finding a sympathetic policeman is the way to go.
