help! blowby thumb test and then OIL...
I hope I didn't just ruin my engine. (84 300SD engine) I was curious about the blowby of my engine and performed the "put the thumb on the breather hose" blowby test. Well, After about 6-7 seconds it stalled, I heard a pop, and then saw a spray of oil come from the vicinity of the oil filter housing. !
What did I just destroy? Is there any likelyhood that this was just pressure pushing oil thru the top of the oil filter housing? Or did I just add something expensive to fix onto the list of repairs? Someone mentioned an oil seal by the IP on another thread, is this likely? And is it fixable by a DIYer? Please help. Last edited by origamitect; 11-12-2005 at 03:42 PM. |

Well look at your IP, if it's not leaking it's probably fine. I would pull the oil filter and inspect it. Also check your breather hose and make sure it didn't pop off somewhere. Monitor your oil level for the next few days of driving and look out for oil leaks. If you don't see anything suspicious, I wouldn't worry about it. A better blowby test is to just loosen the oil filler cap when the engine is hot and watch it. Be careful that an oil drop doesn't land in your eye in case the cap flies off.

Hmmm
Quote:
Best guess: You built up too much pressure in the crankcase, and popped the valve cover gasket or oil filter cover seal ring. Be very glad it was not the rear main seal.

Shut off switch diaphragm? Although that should blow oil into a vacuum hose.
Exactly why I am reluctant to pressurize the crankcase.

I did that test about 3 times on my car, it stalls after about 7-8 seconds. Is that good? It didn't do any damage to mine when I did it.....My engine runs great though, so I'm not worried about anything. Idles smooth and quiet, and Spools/revs like no tomorrow when I floor it. Now that I fixed the vacuum system the tranny shifts nice and firm/quick, so I can keep on the pedal the whole time, made it all the faster/better! No more flaring or tranny slipping, all gone, its awesome.
