Does a gas benz go as many miles as a diesel?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 1992 300E. I'm wondering, do they have the same reputation as the diesel's for being able to go up to 500k miles with proper maintenance?

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Yes, diesels don't last 500k most blow up long before that.

The M103 is a fine engine I think they blow head gaskets once in awhile and burn a bit of oil. I'd worry more about the rest of the car. I have never actually heard of anyone wearing out a properly taken care of MB gas or diesel. Neglect is another story of course.

The first MB I bought was neglected mechanically but the body was just so damn perfect that I couldn't pass it up. I can fix mechanical things, I'm terrible at body work. I'll have to see if this 300E is as rust free.

well

the older diesels, 616 and 617 if non turbo about cant be worn out if taken good care of. the turbo versions seem to need head gaskets and valve work from 250k to 300k. the later diesels such as 601,2,3 have various issues with heads and such. the later diesels such as the 606 non turbo seem pretty stout.

the gasser engines if given good care will last a very long time too. the straight sixes 103 tend to need head gaskets around 100k but otherwise are pretty bulletproof. the 380 v8s tend to need timing chains around 100k or so but otherwise are pretty bulletproof.

the newest i have owned so far is a 91 300d. the ac was a little expensive to fix on that. but this and other systems are the same on gas or diesel so i guess that is off track.

i think it comes down to if you like diesels or not. especially with the fuel prices out of whack.
