Valve Help!

As expected my valves are tight as hell. I don't think they have ever been adjusted. This is going to make me sound like an idiot, but to increase the space between the cam lobe and the whatsit i need to turn the adjusting nut counter clockwise, or to the left, correct?

When you are looking at the valve from above... you will turn the second nut from the top ( the lock nut ) clockwise to loosen the grip on the top nut.
Then you turn the top nut whichever way it takes to get the proper clearance. If yours are too tight then your initial turn will also be clockwise when viewed from the top of the engine.
Keep in mind that many say you don't need a wrench to hold the third item down on the valve.. this is a slotted washer which if held from turning holds the valve from turning... this is important since the clearance adjusting nuts are on the actual valve stem.
I only had three which were not held by the usual spring tension sufficiently to require that I hold the large bottom one.
This is really a three hand job... so if you get frustrated read about the valve adjustment wrenches ... the proper ones have a little holder on the bottom one which allows you to use your two hands for just the top two nuts...
There are some great valve adjustment threads in the archives...

A screwdriver is a perfect tool to hold the valve spring collar in place.

It takes one wrench on the top nut, one wrench on the second nut, something to hold the feeler guage with... and something to hold the lower thing in the event the top ones are stiff...
Are you tall enough to duck tape that screw driver to your middle leg ?
Do the math....

LOL......no math needed.

You stick the screwdriver against one of the flat sides of the spring collar and against another hard surface. works great and no hands are needed.
I used that on one valve of mine that was spinning.
It's a pretty handy trick to use when you can.
