Total newbie question: Engine range for a 81 240D

When ordering parts I noticed I need an engine range to get the correct part. What engine range is my 81 240D? Where can I find this info? I looked at the info tag under the hood I cant find anything that corresponds to these (10-086379-) or (12-027799-) needed to order a t-stat. I do see a couple 10s standing alone and a six digit set in a different location. Anyone have the decoder ring?

Thanks

Jared Ivy

Are they referring to the engine serial number?

I don't know...

Look at FastLane, type up a t-stat for 81 240D. It asks for an engine range. I thought you guys would know.

Yes, last 6 digits of the engine number.

The 10 or 12 refers to manual or automatic transmission. Offhand, I don't remember which is which.

OK, I just looked at my 240D engine. The engine number is stamped on the block (left side, just below the #4 glow plug).

616-912-(10-193617)

Alright my engine block numbers are (10-193617). So which one does it go to? Would there be a difference between the manual and auto transmissions? It a little befuddling.

This is the web site for you stat:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1CQ0J3JZ41NT1D7YP9&year=1981&make=MB&model=240-D-002&category=G&part=Thermostat&appEngines=_any

The top item is listed as Engine: 10-086379-

That indicates a range of engine numbers greater than 10-086379, which includes yours.

Yes, certain engine parts may be different depending on transmission type.
