81 300TD - getting the stereo out

Hey Guys,

Well last night I tried to get the old stereo out of my 81 300TD wagon w/o AC, no dice. I looked through the old post but could not find a good expaination how to remove the center console.

I took the ash tray out and removed the two screws from there and I also removed the one screw from the rear of the console. Where is the top attached? Am I going about this the wrong way? I did try to just slide out the old deck but it seems to be in there pretty good.

Thanks for the help,

Tim

I would be surprised if you need to remove the console to get the stereo out. Normally you can remove some trim around the stereo and somehow slide it out. You may find some screws or clips behind the trim.

My '83 was as follows (more or less):
1 Remove the two knobs (volume and tune)
2 There should be a nut under each, remove those.
3 Remove face (basically just prys off, flexible metal)
4 There should be two vertical bars inside, I believe you just lossen them, then pull them to the top or bottom.
5 Slide out stereo.

Ther should be no need to remove anything but the ashtray.
