Thumbs up OK guys-WHO WANTS A W123 MANUAL TRANS CONVERSION??

Down here in Cincinnati, right by me, is an '81 240D 4 speed, 277K miles, unfortunately kind of rusty (floorboards, jack points gone, doors and fenders kind of bad too), but actually has a halfway decent motor, a lot of parts I need, but (I think) PROBABLY too rusty to fix. I can score it pretty cheap, and would consider stripping it and parting it out-IF somebody can come up with $700 to buy the manual tranny parts(and you would get EVERYTHING you would need). Any interest, let me know FAST-I don't think it'll last long(at a super cheapo used car lot). Phone # is (513)948-0211.

I'm sorry bullwinkle, I'm having computer problems. It looked like you said $700 bucks for the manual tranny parts......

I did-but maybe that's too much -actually the guy wants $700 for the whole car, and that's with no exhaust, dead vacuum system, and rust everywhere-just threw it out there to see if anyone could use the manual trans/etc., I'd do it to my 300D, but I have a recently rebuilt automatic and can't afford a divorce!!! Angel, the car is at Austin's Autos on Vine St. in Hartwell-about 4 blocks south of Galbraith Rd. It's dark blue with large dark orange holes!

I know where a 1979 240D 4 speed is (rusty in the back) for $900.00 that rides and drives, if another board member hasn't gotten it yet. I've been seriously thinking about it, but I really want a 300D. Even then I'm thinking about it as diesel is still .40 higher then gas around here, and my 735iL gets around 23 and the 190E 2.3 gets 29mpg, decisions...

Talking sure it's roadworthy-in OH!

This one would probably ride and drive as long as you don't mind sitting at a 30 degree angle to the left with the seat against the door pillar, with no exhaust whatsoever, and an engine that won't shut off unless you drop the clutch and stall it(bet that's good for the driveline). These guys crack me up-if it moves off the lot, it's yours with no warranty whatsoever-it's about 45 seconds from my house-like a d@mn hooptie factory!

I was thinking $400-500 for the whole car. If it's the uber-rare 5sp, then $700 is a bargain. I think a 4sp in good shape is worth about $300, maybe $500 for a full kit with good clutch & universal joints.

I bought an '82 240D 4spd with mondo frame rot from a member of this board for $500. And I drove it home under its own power. Heck I've even been driving it back and forth to work for the last week or two. I do plan on parting it out soon (regrettably).

$3 diesel is my ally here

I'm trying to talk the guys down on it-I just wanted to see if there was any need for the parts, I'm probably going to buy it anyway if I can get it for around $500-I need a BUNCH of minor trim parts, cruise sw, window reg, seat bases, and would like an engine to try to rebuild to see how much aggravation I can get out of it-there's an awful lot of dead engined rust-free 240Ds in California!

What you recon a clean dead W123 from out west would bring around these parts? More where you are then down here, for certain. Now you've got me thinking...

Where are those dead engined rust free 240D's? I don't see em. The 240D engine market is extremely scarce it took me 6 months to find a good one I had my rust free 4 speed manual on the block for ages for $700 and nobody wanted it. If you find one out here it will likely have a shot motor and you'll have to tow it home. Even the poorest running diesel around CA is going to run at least $1k.

dead CA 240Ds all over cars.com

Every time I do a search on cars.com it seems to return at least 2 or 3 cars listed on a paper called the "Recycler" that is in CA? Usually they are in the $700-$900 range needing a motor. The problem here in Rust Belt, USA is that we have no shortage of reasonable mileage, usually decent interior cars, with decent engines even, that are TOTALLY eaten alive with rust, heading to charity auctions, etc. I know it would be big money to have a car shipped here, but it wouldn't be bad if somebody was out west with a trailer needing a load to bring back.

Several years ago, I decided to start getting clean rust free pickup cabs and beds from down south and out west.

By the time I received them, I could barely make enough money to break even when sold. Still thinking about it though, even though on a local level, there isn't much demand for old W123s... or really, and old Mercedes in general.
