About to adjust my valves...do I have to wait until it's warmer?

1982 300D

Hi, everyone. I had planned to adjust my valves over the holiday weekend, but I'm concerned that the working temperatures (in the 40s) could affect the adjustments. Am I okay to adjust them in this cooler weather, or do I have to wait until spring

I ask because I seem to remember someone saying that colder weather can affect the valve adjustments. I'm just not sure how cold is cold enough to be a factor.

Thanks,

Pete.

Its always recommended to adjust them cold. I think it would be just fine to adjust them in those temps. Whats not good is to adjust them on a warm engine.

There are specifications hot and cold for the 617. My car has a sticker under the hood specifying x clearance at y temp. IIRC, exhaust is 0.3mm hot, 0.35mm cold. intake 0.1mm hot, 0.15mm cold. Check yours!

Fortyish should be perfect if you've let it sit overnight. Good luck keeping your fingers from freezing. I don't think that's cold enough to require a different setting. I think I remember reading that the gaps change when it gets considerably colder though.
