Mercedes ever have a factory tachometer in a 240D?

Can't recall ever seeing one. A clock, always a clock.

The only W123 diesels I've ever seen with a factory tach are the Turbodiesels. I can't recall if the 190D's are the same with the no-turbo no-tach philosophy.

My 190D non-turbo has a tach (thank god... the thing revvvs on the highway!)

:coool:

i asked this question early in my 240d owning career and received the same answer then as i am imparting on you now...

you do not need a tachometer, the fuel supply is governed(?by the ip?) and this regulates the engine speed, the engine should never redline because of this.

the clock is a charming piece of automotive history, enjoy it!

in a year, youll wonder why you ever needed a tachometer!! in some cases, you might even try, in vain, to tell the time by your tachometer. ive found this to be true in my neon, and it is a manual transmission.

i thought manual transmission cars *had* to have tachometers when i was 16. how things change in 7 years, huh?

I fail to see the logic of the MB engineers. Why would they put a clock on the manny-tranny W123's and a Tach on the automatic turbo's? It seems like it should be the other way around. Mabye having a turbocharger moves you up into a higher luxury bracket?

I know the 300D was a more expensive car new-that's why it has all the toys such as ACC, tach, power windows and locks, auto trans only, you know, all the cr@p which is always BROKEN!!!!:furious3:

I've had a couple 300Ds that didn't have tachs, either, even the 1984 I think. All the turbos I've had have had the little tach/clock combo, however.

Oh, I had a 1980 300D with a 4 speed stick, rusted almost in half. Until recently, I didn't know they are fairly hard to find. That was the rustiest Benz I've personally ever seen, lol. Not sure what they did to it.

The speedo on my '83 240 has little dots indicating the "redline". If you look closely near the 25mph mark you'll see a little square dot. Then again at the 40mph mark you'll see 2 dots and then at the 65mph mark you'll see 3 dots. 1 dot= shift from 1st to 2nd...2 dots=second to 3rd and so on.

Never revved mine to the max. I like my engine too much.:D

Cheers,

Bill

my friends think that the clock is "totally sweet and old school."

That's pretty cool, I've seen them on some pulling (garden) tractors, go carts and stuff.

I got a Tinytach as well. Super-simple install, too bad it doesn't have a backlight... Worth the $65 though.
I mostly use it to verify my speed because my speedo reads waaay low. The tach helps me keep around 3250rpm on the highway (around 60, and plenty of RPM anyways) other than that I have only used it to check and set idle speed and max governing speed.

I have to agree with iNeon though - not a great need for a tach on these cars, but I found that out after installing the tach  If I ever fix the speedo, the tinytach might be removed. I think removing the clock for a tach would be a disservice.

60 MPH on the highway??

You'd get run over here. Everybody does 80.

Cheers,

Bill
